Lorenzo Salgado Araujo had lived in the U.S. for decades and had nearly obtained legal status according to his family. He was pulled over and shot dead by ICE officers while on his way to his construction jobsite. There are no videos, but DHS claims he weaponized his vehicle; the same claim they made about Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this year.

Johan Sebastian Guerrero was only 25 years old and on his way to work when he was killed during a traffic stop by ICE agents. The agent who killed Guerrero was newly sworn in, David Brouillette. He has a history of domestic violence and mental health issues; a statement to the vetting process for ICE agents in the field. DHS claims he feared for public safety when Guerrero attempted to flee, so he shot into the moving vehicle.

Another victim of an ICE traffic stop was killed in Florida this month. His identity hasn’t been reported that I could find. When ICE pulled him over, rather than try to flee in his vehicle and face the same fate as Salgado and Guerrero, he fled on foot and was struck by a tractor trailer. ICE didn’t pull the trigger on this man, but if it weren’t for their traffic stop he would still be alive.

By my count this year alone, at least 31 people have been killed by ICE either in detention, in the field, or by being left for dead. Some of these people have been U.S. citizens. Some have been legal residents. Most have had no criminal record. But none of this matters. ICE agents shouldn’t be allowed to kill anyone. Detention centers shouldn’t be deadly hotbeds. Due process is a constitutional right in the United States, and that right is being infringed upon every day by this administration.

Nolan Wells, a Black teen, went out on a boat with a group of mostly white classmates in Mississippi. They traveled out to a Horn Island and when the boat returned, Wells was not on board. His body was found days later in the water on the island shore. An independent autopsy came back inconclusive due to some remains being held by the state during their autopsy, a routine practice. The state autopsy results have not yet been released. The teens who returned without Wells said that he had met a girl and stayed back with her when they left. The girl says he left with the boys. Wells’ phone was found with one of the classmates, who claims he left it on the boat, but Nolan’s family suspects some pictures or posts may have been deleted. His keys were also found at a classmate’s home.

Kohen Wiley was only a year old when he was shot by police in Mississippi. He was with his mom and her friend at a local Walmart when the police responded to a call about shoplifting. The women were carrying a box of diapers they say were paid for when they walked out of the store. The police saw Kohen in the lap of one of the women in their car as they attempted to leave the parking lot. Alleging that the women had weaponized their vehicle and that officers were in imminent danger, police opened fire on the moving vehicle, killing the baby and critically injuring one of the women. An independent autopsy report indicates that Wiley was shot in the side specifically by a bullet that flew through the passenger window, evidenced by cuts on his right side caused by the spray of glass. The officer that fired the shot that killed Kohen was not in front of the vehicle. Kohen Wiley died by state-sanctioned violence because Walmart accused his mother and her friend of stealing diapers.

Mississippi police are investigating both of these instances. But the state has a distant and recent history of covering up the deaths of Black people and failing to provide justice for the victims and their families. Both families are being represented by Ben Crump, who has represented several Black families as they seek justice for wrongful deaths of their loved ones.

The Memorandum of Understanding collapsed and the war has resumed. We’ve targeted civilian infrastructure in Iran, and Iran has targeted commercial shipping and our bases in the region. Trump claims the Iranians are desperate to come back to the table, begging for another ceasefire. And yet, they continue to strike back. Several Americans have been killed, and some reports indicate that the Pentagon isn’t being forthcoming about the number of deaths and injuries.

We’re running through our stockpile of Patriot and Tomahawk Missiles. And while we do have alternative munitions we can use, they have shorter ranges and require more dangerous operations. We’ve been working on bulking up our munitions manufacturing since 2024, but it’s a years-long process to build plants and get them running. And it’s not only us who use these types of weapons — we sell them all over the world. So as we deplete the stock, not only does it jeopardize the safety of our troops who have to have engage in more dangerous missions, it also becomes clear to our paying customers and to our adversaries that we’ve weakened our position by irresponsibly managing our stockpiles.

Hegseth estimates that the war has already cost taxpayers $37 billion, and is asking for another $200 billion. Before going on recess, the House passed more than $1 trillion in funding for the military through an annual bill called the National Defense Authorization Act. Six Democrats voted with Republicans to pass the bill. The NDAA would not only provide this funding, but also includes a provision to further integrate military relations between the U.S. and Israel. It would conjoin defense research, development, testing, evaluation, and industrial cooperation between our two nations as we continue to wage War in Iran and Lebanon, and genocide in Palestine. The Senate has to pass their own version and then negotiate a final agreement with the House before the bill can become law.

The House also passed a budget blueprint through reconciliation which provides more than $70 billion for the war in Iran. Senate Majority Leader Thune has said he’s going to prioritize funding the government through the midterms (funding is currently set to lapse in September), but that if he can’t, he’ll consider action on the reconciliation framework.

All due respect (none), that’s bullshit. Democrats in the House aren’t doing enough to push back against the current regime, but this messaging campaign is election-year theater.

The bill they’re referring to is the Stop Insider Trading Act. Except, it wouldn’t stop insider trading. In fact, insider trading has been illegal in Congress since 2012 but that hasn’t been enforced even once since then. This bill would increase the penalties, but wouldn’t strengthen enforcement measures. It would ban members of Congress and their families from buying individual stocks, but not from buying other forms of exploitable investments, and it wouldn’t require them to divest from any individual stocks they currently own. It would, however allow them to sell stocks as long as they give a public heads up a week in advance. Do you think Congress doesn’t have insider knowledge a week in advance?

At least three other bills have been proposed by this very Congress, by both Republicans and Democrats, which would have provided for stronger enforcement and actually done something to address insider trading in the government. None of those made it to either chamber floor for a vote. Why might that be?

But even setting aside the toothlessness of the Stop Insider Trading Act, Republicans included a completely unrelated provision: a requirement for voter ID in federal elections. They did this so that Democrats would vote against the bill, and they could flood their pre-election messaging campaigns with claims that Democrats don’t want to address insider trading. It’s a ploy.

They know it won’t pass the Senate. They’re pretending to address insider trading so they can point the finger at Democrats and claim they’re the real villains using their offices to enrich themselves. We’re paying them Congressional salaries on the taxpayer dime to do political theater. Insider trading is a bipartisan issue. There are politicians on both sides of the aisle who engage in these practices, and there are politicians on both sides of the aisle who oppose them. Republicans are trying, as per usual, to pull the wool over the eyes of the American public while they allow the status quo to remain.

Join local protests. Support organizations that engage in meaningful resistance. Withhold your money; don’t feed corporations or MAGA business owners any more than you absolutely have to. Shop locally and intentionally. Don’t spend when you don’t need to, unless it’s to support business owners in your community who align with your values.

It’s election season, and Trump is setting the stage to call fraud when his side loses. Volunteer for candidates you feel strongly about. Sign up to be an election judge, or to otherwise support your county’s election process. Talk to people about the importance of voting, even when things feel futile; especially when things feel futile. But don’t let that be the extent of your action. Stand up for what’s right. Pay attention to what’s going on. And take care of yourself, so you’re ready to mobilize at a moment’s notice if possible.
